পক্ষে কিছুমাত্র কঠিন নহে, নইলে এ দেশের দুর্গতি কিসের। অতএব, চাকরির অধিকার নহে, মনুষত্বের অধিকারের যোগ্য হইবার প্রতি যদি লক্ষ রাখি, তবে শিক্ষা সম্বন্ধে সম্পূর্ণ স্বাতন্ত্র্য-চেষ্টার দিন আসিয়াছে, এ বিষয়ে সন্দেহ নাই। দেশের লোককে শিশুকাল হইতে মানুষ করিবার সদুপায় যদি নিজে উদ্ভাবন এবং তাহার উদ্যোগ যদি নিজে না করি, তবে আমরা সর্বপ্রকারে বিনাশপ্রাপ্ত হইব—অন্নে মরিব, স্বাস্থ্যে মরিব, বুদ্ধিতে মরিব, চরিত্রে মরিব—ইহা নিশ্চয়। বস্তুত আমরা প্রত্যহই মরিতেছি অথচ তাহার প্রতিকারের উপযুক্ত চেষ্টামাত্র করিতেছি না,তাহার চিন্তামাত্র যথার্থরূপে আমাদের মনেও উদয় হইতেছে না, এই যে নিবিড় মোহাবৃত নিরুদ্যম ও চরিত্রবিকার-বাল্যকাল হইতে প্রকৃত শিক্ষা ব্যতীত কোনো অনুষ্ঠান-প্রতিষ্ঠানের দ্বারা ইহা নিবারণের কোনো উপায় নাই

বর্তমানকালে যে একটিমাত্র সাধক য়ুরোপে গুরুর আসনে বসিয়া নিরন্তর অরণ্যে রোদন করিয়া মরিতেছেন সেই টল্‌স্টয় রুশিয়ার শিক্ষানীতি সম্বন্ধে যে-কথা বলিয়াছেন তাহার কিয়দংশ উদ্‌ধৃত করি।

It seems to me that it is now specially important to do what is right quietly and persistently, not only without asking permission from Government, but consciously avoiding its participation. The strength of the Government lies in the people's ignorance, and the Government knows this, and will therefore always oppose true enlightenment. It is time we realized that fact. And it is most undesirable to let the Government, while it is spreading darkness, pretend to be busy with the enlightenment of the people. It is doing this now by means of all sorts of pseudo educational establishment which it controls; schools, high schools, universities, academies, and all kinds of committees and congresses. But good is good and enlightenment is enlightenment, only when it is quite good and quite enlightened and not when it is toned down to meet the requirements of Delyanof's or Dournovo's circulars. And I am extremely sorry when I see valuable, disinterested, and self-sacrificing efforts spent unprofitably. It is strange to see good, wise people spending their strength in a struggle against the Government, but carrying on this struggle on the basis of whatever laws the Government itself likes to make.
